Black Deaf Schools

 

Before the Supreme Court decided in Plessy vs. Ferguson, all schools were segregated including deaf schools (Hairston, Smith, 1983).  Black deaf schools were located near black colleges or housed in a building on campus for white deaf children.  Many of these schools followed a vocational educational tract and used teachers from the college or throughout the community (Hairston, Smith, 1983).  If students were to graduate with a diploma, attending Gallaudet was not an option.  Gallaudet did not accept black student until the mid 1900’s.
