Public School Benefits

            There are benefits to every educational placement provided for deaf children. Public schools, although controversial at times, offer deaf students the ability to learn alongside their hearing peers. If other services are necessary, the school will provide them. An itinerant teacher, who provides assistance at multiple campuses, may come to provide specialized instruction for the student. A speech-language pathologist may be included in order for the deaf student to improve their speech and language skills. Interpreters are also available and can be placed in the general education classroom without taking the student outside of the classroom.

            The deaf student is able to be an equal participant in the classroom with the use of an FM system (usually between the teacher and student) or interpreter. The general education teacher is also able to place this student in a desk that allows them to see the other students, interpreter, instruction, and teacher easily.

            Not only will the deaf students benefit from being placed in a public school, but the other hearing students will benefit from their contact with deaf classmates. They may develop their sign language skills, awareness of deaf people, or other communication techniques in order to socialize with their deaf classmate. These relationships are able to form quicker than their relationships with deaf students in the separate classes because of the amount of contact time between the two groups of students.
